TECH-TALK: 'ELF VR'
Let's face it, the biggest drawbacks to VR are sub-standard resolution (causing constant focus-wheel annoyance!) and the vast amount of plastic you have to strap to your face. This needs to change, fast. Samsung are already working hard on their next dev headset and this seems incredibly promising in terms of resolution (more here). However, just as important as resolution, is making VR goggles more like, well, goggles, rather than gigantic chunks of plastic.
We've been following the work of a company called Kopin closely and their developments with the cutely-named 'Elf VR' headset. At around half-the-size and far lighter than current headsets, it boasts impressive numbers, with a 1-inch display with 2,048 x 2,048 per-eye resolution and running at a whopping 120Hz.
They seem to be edging ever closer to consumer-level production... so watch this (Elf-sized) space.
