We're all about telling stories and when a new storytelling medium like VR comes along, we're super excited. So when we see a VR film that could only be told in VR, we have to write about it. Ctrl is a new short film that perfectly fits this billing. It tells the tale of Liam, a young gamer obsessed with an e-sports competition in the midst of a war at home.
It's difficult to say too much about the narrative without giving the game away (pun intended, sorry!). However, suffice it to say that here is a film that is based on a really interesting premise/concept - and one that only VR could do it full justice. Although it's overly long and the CGI is fairly low-grade, you can't help but be drawn into the story and the plight of this young man and his domestic struggles. The theme of differing realities and escapism is the perfect partner to the medium and I defy anyone to not feel something pretty profound for the characters and the issues involved as the film's credits role. Bravo.
It does cost £2.99 but come on, it's totally worth it. And you could probably do without that morning coffee anyway! Available on Oculus. Watched on Samsung Gear VR.
