Gorillaz have always been a hugely experimental and innovative outfit and as a virtual band, it was only a matter of time before they entered the VR fray. Not so much a matter of 'if' but 'when' and 'how'. With their latest music video, 'Spirit House 360' they haven't disappointed. It's an incredibly ambitious, psychedelic romp. Rifting on the worlds-within-worlds theme, we're taken on an extremely fun journey from a train, into a 'spirited' house and up into space to ride on a comet with a giant snake (obvs!). They haven't pulled any punches and the CGI worlds created as a backdrop to the Gorillaz animation characters we've grown to know-and-love, work incredibly well. This is a world I want to inhabit and I can't wait to see what they come up with next. More like this, please.
It's no surprise, then, that the video is breaking all records as the most successful 360 music video of all time. Ever. Like since people started making VR music videos. It received over 3 million views in the first 48 hours and has notched up around 7.5million total views-to-date. Interestingly, this equates to around 1 in 4 of all views (including the non-VR version) being in 360 - that's pretty impressive! It's also slightly outperforming it's non-VR counterpart in terms of engagement rate (4.7% to 3.4%), like ratio (97.7% to 95%), as well as number of shares (it has roughly half the amount of shares with only a quarter the number of views). It's only a small step but I can't help but think it's an important one in terms of the reach of VR. Brands please take note.
